BMI Calculations for Men and Women
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. At any time during one of your visits to your healthcare provider it is likely he/she calculated your BMI to see where you fit on the obesity chart. This is done to determine if you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight or clinically obese. One drawback of the BMI calculator is that it doesn’t take into account your body fat content versus your lean tissue (muscle) content. What this means is an athlete that is 6ft 2in may have the same BMI as an individual who lives a sedentary lifestyle and be considered overweight, when indeed the athlete is in good health. There are two ways to calculate your Body Mass Index, metric and imperial. Metric – For this method a person’s weight in kilograms is divided by their height in meters squared. Example: Weight – 90 kilograms Height – 1.9 meters 1.9 squared = 3.61 90 divided by 3.61 = Body Mass Index of 24.93 Imperial – For this method a person’s weight in pounds is multiplied by 703, and t
